St Mary’s FC Women’s Coach ~ Ryan Smith
In this episode of The Mind Your Body Show, Jacob and Ryan discussed Ryan's life journey, including his early life and how he got into football, eventually leading to his current position as coach of the St. Mary's football club women's team. They bonded over their shared experiences growing up in Darwin and the challenges of living in tough neighborhoods and dealing with peer pressure. Ryan shared his journey to playing Aussie Rules and how he ended up at St. Mary's through peer pressure and a desire for purpose and connection. He also discussed the importance of purpose and connection in building loyalty towards a club and shared his experience playing under different coaches.
Ryan discussed his coaching philosophy of finding different methods of communication and encouraging commitment to the process to help players improve. He emphasized the importance of skill level and suggested that women should buy a footy and touch it as much as possible to improve. Jacob and Ryan also discussed the benefits of cross-sport training, particularly in basketball, soccer, and athletics, for footy players.
They highlighted the importance of running mechanics and the role of running in footy, and suggested that a multifaceted approach to sports training can be beneficial for young athletes. Finally, they discussed their personal experiences in sports, the importance of setting small goals, and the value of positive peer pressure in achieving success.
