The Benefits of Organic Coconut Sugar

Most people know that sugar is not good for you. That it’s worse than fat. But people still eat sugar and everyone still likes the sweet stuff. It’s good to enjoy some sweet food sometimes. Coconut palm sugar is a better option than other types of sugar.

Coconut palm sugar is lower in glycemic index (GI), meaning it takes longer to digest and hence, doesn’t spike your blood sugar and insulin levels. That essentially means it releases energy more slowly, giving you energy over a (slightly) longer period of time. Think of dumping 10L of water on your garden. You could dump 10L in one go or you could pour it out of a bucket more slowly over a couple of minutes. Real low GI foods, like pasta, would pour that 10L out of a hose over an hour.

In terms of making you fat, it’s well-known that coconuts are high in fat, particularly saturated fat. Saturated fat increases your low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, which is considered the ‘bad’ cholesterol because it is associated with high blood pressure. But the thing with coconuts is that they also increase your HDL cholesterol, often considered the ‘good’ cholesterol. No other food high in saturated fat does that. But the most important thing about coconuts isn’t their fat content. It’s all the other ingredients. If you want a superfood, go for coconuts. And if you want sugar, choose coconut palm sugar.

The Benefits of Organic Coconut Sugar

  • Rich in vitamins. Coconut palm sugar contains a variety of vitamins including twelve of the essential Vitamin B complex.

  • Rich in healing properties. Coconut palm sugar is full of anti-microbial, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties meaning it helps to protect and heal the body.

  • Unrefined. Food which is unrefined contains high concentrations of antioxidants and fibre. These may protect you against chronic diseases.

  • Rich in amino acids. Coconut palm sugar contains 16 amino acids. Amino acids are the building blocks of the body. They are required for the growth, repair and maintenance of cells all throughout the body.

  • Rich in minerals. Coconut palm sugar contains many minerals including potassium, magnesium, zinc, iron, boron, sulfur, calcium and copper. Minerals are important nutrients for having higher levels of energy and thriving in life.

  • 100% organic. Pesticides are dangerous to the environment and your body. High levels of pesticides in the body have been linked to health risks such as cancer, ADHD, Alzheimer’s disease, birth defects, as well as behavioural and growth problems in children.

Sugar has been maligned in recent years, and rightly so. But sugar in the form of the modest coconut palm provides so many health benefits. If you want to sweeten a meal or drink, do so with coconut palm sugar instead.

What type of sugar do you add to your food and drink to sweeten it up?
